But how have bells become associated with Christmas?
Long ago, people believed that they could frighten evil spirits away with noise making, especially with bells, which were inexpensive and easy to obtain. Many thought that as winter began, evil spirits would come to do harm, and so during the dark days after harvest time, people engaged in ceremonies to keep evil at bay until the sunshine returned in the spring. Among these customs were the ringing of the bells and the tradition of “ringing out the old and ringing in the new.”
The tradition carried over into the celebration of Christmas and was further associated with Christmas due to the ringing of the church Bells. In addition since bells make a happy sound, they became associated with something joyous, something worth celebrating. Bells began to appear in songs, poems, and stories. And, in Victorian times, it was fashionable to go caroling with small handheld bells to play the tune of the carol. Sometimes carolers would not sing but would only ring the bells.
Bells are still associated with Christmas and are remembered in classic holiday songs, including “Jingle Bells,” “Silver Bells,” “Carol of the Bells,” and many others.
